"This Year, I Will...": Reaching New Year's Resolutions

Did you see Nurse Connie Bryan's live interview January 9th on WNDU-TV's "16 Morning News"? In case you missed it, here is a list of Connie's tips to help you achieve your New Year's Resolutions (which can actually help you at any time of year):

1. Have a Specific "Action Plan" - What specifically is your goal? And to reach it, what specifically will you do? How Often? And on what date will you start? And write it down! For example: "Beginning tomorrow, I want to lose 1.5 pounds a week for 10 weeks by replacing soda with water."

2. Have Motivational Reminders - You want to live a different, better life. Remind yourself of WHY you want to make changes...by posting pictures of your kids or grandkids on your refirgerator, a money jar of savings on your desk, a photo of the wedding dress you want to fit into, etc.

3. Be Realistic - Rome wasn't conquered in one day. Don't overwhelm yourself. Take baby steps. Instead of saying I have 100 pounds to lose, start with 10. Instead of giving up coffee, switch to the half-decaf coffee. If you can't walk around the block yet, start with a short walk in the yard.

4. Tell Someone / "Buddy Up" - It's one thing to say to yourself, I'm going to lose 20 pounds by Spring Break. It's another to tell friends and family. And when you partner up with someone to lose weight or to stop smoking, that's even better. Because then, you have each other for both support and for accountability.

5. Constantly Reevaluate - What's working? Did I reach my goal for the week? If not, why not? Am I feeling better about myself?, etc.

6. Don't Give Up! - There will be times when you will stumble. Don't quit! Again, Rome wasn't conquered in one day. Get back on the horse and keep pressing forward.
