CONNIE'S CORNER: ONE STEP FORWARD

"Twenty years from now, you will be more disappointed by the things that you didn't do than the ones you did do. So throw off the bowlines. Sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover."
             - Mark Twain

Like our company recently took a step to expand its offices, I encourage you to find the strength to take your next step to becoming who you want to be.

KAYLIN'S MONTHLY FIT TIP

Trim Torsos: Tired of doing countless crunches and sit ups without seeing the results you desire? Consider this: traditional crunches only work a small portion of your core muscles.

Try a movement like the Russian Twist to ensure you are working the upper, lower, and mid abdominals as well as the obliques and back. A move like this can trim the entire torso by the end of the summer!

Sitting on the floor hold a small handweight straight out in front of you and lean back slightly until you feel your abs contract, keep your back straight and chest up (your torso should be at about 45 degrees to the floor). Twist your torso as far as you can to the left, and then reverse the motion, twisting as far as you can to the right. That's one rep, do 3 sets of 10-15.

Beginners may want to try this move without a weight.

To make this move more advanced, cross your ankles and lift the feet about 6 inches off the floor for added resistance on the core muscles.

WELLNESS TIPS

FOCUS ON FATS!:

Adults should get 20 to 35 percent of their total calories from fat, according to the 2010 Dietary Guidelines for Americans. Eating fat can be heart-healthy if you pick the right kind. Too many will cut fat and end up replacing it with refined carbs, causing them miss out on the benefits of healthy fats. Use this guide to make sure you're getting enough of the right kind!

BALANCED BREAKFAST:

Skipping breakfast can cause a dip in you blood sugar and metabolism. This can leave you feeling tired, irritable, and unable to focus. Choosing a breakfast like cereal with whole grains can boost your energy and brain power throughout the entire day. Keep in mind, this also applies for school aged children. Plus, the whole grains provide heart healthy benefits such as fiber, which can assist weight loss!

HEALTHY VEGGIE RECIPE

Apricot-Glazed Roasted Asparagus

Need a delicious and HEALTHY veggie side-dish that the whole family will enjoy? In every newsletter, we'll feature a new food for you to try.

In this edition, we focus on asparagus.

This highly prized vegetable arrives with the coming of spring, when its shoots break through the soil and reach their 6-8 inch harvest length. When in season, asparagus is fresh, cheap, and oh-so-versatile! Adding some sweetness with apricot in this recipe will make it a favorite for the whole family! Health note: asparagus packs a healthy dose of fiber, aiding in digestion, and a high amount of Potassium, which can help lower blood pressure.
